The foundations of faith — six beliefs every Muslim holds in the heart, taught by the Prophet ﷺ in the hadith of Jibril.

The Six Pillars of Iman

About this infographic

When Jibril (عليه السلام) came in the form of a man and asked the Prophet ﷺ about Iman, he answered with six beliefs. Together they form the foundation of a Muslim’s faith.

The hadith of Jibril

“Iman is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers and the Last Day, and to believe in the divine decree, its good and its bad.” — Sahih Muslim 8; see also Qur’an 4:136.

1. Belief in Allah

That He is One, with no partner, and worthy of all worship.

2. His Angels

Created from light, they obey Allah and carry out His commands.

3. His Books

The scriptures He revealed, culminating in the Qur’an.

4. His Messengers

From Adam to Muhammad ﷺ, the final messenger.

5. The Last Day

The Day of Resurrection, when every soul is held to account.

6. Divine Decree (Qadar)

That everything happens by Allah’s knowledge and will — its good and its bad.
